Damavand trekking tour - Climb in Iran

Image

Mount Damavand is the highest peak of Iran (5671 m., or according to other sources: 5604 m., 5610 m.), and one of Volcanic Seven Summits (the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents).

Situated northeast of Tehran, it offers a unique mountaineering experience with spectacular volcanic landscapes, sulfur vents near the summit, and breathtaking views of surrounding valleys.

Due to the lack of technical difficulties while climbing, Damavand is an ideal destination not only for enthusiasts of reaching the highest volcanoes of all continents, but also for the determined beginners looking to summit their first 5000-meter peak.

During our Damavand trekking tour, in addition to the exhilarating ascent, you will have the chance to explore Tehran - a bustling capital of Iran, where ancient traditions meet modern lifestyle.

Our expert team will guide you through every step of the journey, ensuring a safe, memorable, and culturally rich experience.

Day 1: Arrival in Tehran, short sightseeing
Upon landing at Imam Khomeini International Airport, you will be greeted by our guide and transferred to a hotel in the heart of Tehran. Depending on the time of your arrival, we will be able to refresh ourselves at the hotel and then set off to explore the capital of Iran. We will have opportunity to visit beautiful Golestan palace and National Museum of Iran. After that we will go to famous Grand Bazaar, where we can buy oriental spices and handicrafts, and also soak up the atmosphere of the place while sipping tea in small cafes. We will also immerse ourselves in the hustle and bustle of Tehran streets. At the evening we will have dinner at a restaurant and try the local cuisine, which is considered one of the attractions of the country.
Your guide will then provide an overview of the trekking itinerary, highlighting what to expect over the coming days.
You will spend the night in a comfortable hotel, allowing you to rest before heading to the mountains.

Day 2: Polour Village to Gosfand Sara Camp (3050 m)
The morning begins with a drive to Polour Village, located at an elevation of about 2200 m. Here, at the National Mountaineering Federation’s office, we obtain the necessary climbing permits. Then we switch to 4x4 vehicles for the journey to Gosfand Sara Camp located at the elevation 3050 m. This site, situated near an old mosque that has been adapted to accommodate travelers, offers either simple shelter or tent camping. Spending the night at Gosfand Sara allows you to start acclimatizing to the higher altitude in preparation for the days ahead.

Day 3: Ascent to Bargah Sevom Camp (4200 m)
After breakfast, we load our belongings onto mules, which will transport them to the next camp. The trek to Bargah Sevom Camp, perched at about 4200 m., typically takes 4-5 hours. Along the way, you will be treated to expansive views of the mountain’s volcanic terrain. Once at camp, the afternoon is yours to relax, explore the surroundings, or simply rest and adjust to the thinner air.
Accommodation for the night is provided in a mountain hut or in tents, depending on the group’s preference and availability.

Day 4: Acclimatization Hike
Following breakfast, you embark on a further acclimatization hike, this time reaching elevations of 4800-5000 m. Spending a few hours at these heights helps your body adapt for the upcoming summit push. In the afternoon, you will return to Bargah Sevom Camp, where you can relax, review your gear, and enjoy an early dinner. Rest is crucial at this stage, so you will aim for an early bedtime in preparation for tomorrow’s summit climb.

Day 5: Summit Attempt on Mount Damavand
The summit day begins very early, typically around 2–3 a.m. The ascent itself usually takes between five and seven hours. Although the climb involves no major technical challenges, the high altitude and occasional sulfur fumes near the crater can present unique difficulties. Once at the summit, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After sufficient time for photographs and celebration, the group returns to Bargah Sevom Camp for a well-deserved rest. Overnight arrangements remain at the hut or in tents.

Day 6: Descent and Return to Tehran
After breakfast, it’s time to descend to Gosfand Sara Camp. From there, off-road vehicles will take you back to Polour Village. If the schedule allows, you may stop to enjoy the volcanic hot springs, a relaxing treat for tired muscles. The group then continues by road to Tehran, arriving in time for some final city exploration or rest at the hotel. This evening marks your last night in Tehran, allowing you to savor any final impressions of the capital.

Day 7: Departure
On the final day, you will transfer to Imam Khomeini International Airport for your return flight.
As your adventure draws to a close, you leave Iran with new memories.
